Jamie grew angrier at Bae by the day.
Sheâd been looking for the little twit for three days now and still didnât have a clue where she was. Bae had gone off the grid, making Jamieâs search for her more difficult. Ironic, since Jamie was the one who taught her how to go into hiding without being found. Bae seemed to be doing everything right. She had ditched her cell phone and wasnât using her credit card, so Jamie had to resort to good, old-fashioned detective work.
Bae had to sleep somewhere. Jamie figured sheâd follow the playbook. Seek out a motor lodge or inn. Some place that didnât have security cameras. It had to be a place that didnât require a credit card deposit or driverâs license to check in. By definition, someplace seedy. Where all kinds of nefarious transactions took place. Only a hunch, but Jamie figured Bae would be staying at one of the thirty-six motor lodges, motels, or inns in and around Chicago that fit that description.
Jamie had spent the last two days going from location to location. What a colossal pain in the neck Bae was being. Jamie had half a mind to get on a plane and go back home and let the chips fall where they may. Bae obviously thought she was old enough to make her own decisions and was avoiding Jamie. At the same time, she considered Bae like the little sister she never had. Other than Alex, Jamie had no family.
That thought caused a tear to well up in Jamieâs eye. She couldnât bear the thought of losing Bae as well. She had to keep pressing on. If she found Bae, and the girl refused to come home with her, then at least she had tried.
Jamie pulled into an alleyway across from the Central Inn of Chicago and began to scope it out. Eventually, sheâd go into the managerâs office and flash a picture of Bae. No worker would ever give up that information except for money or if under duress, but Jamie was trained to tell when someone recognized a photo. Even if the employee didnât recognize the picture, it didnât mean much. Bae couldâve checked in when the person wasnât working. Or couldâve been wearing a disguise. Or simply snuck into one of the rooms.
Which made Jamieâs job harder. At some point, she might need some luck. Bae was like the proverbial needle in a haystack.
Alex could be of some help, but he was knee deep in another mission. He was still on their island in the Caribbean working with Pok. The two of them were chasing Somali pirates around the Indian Ocean. Not literally, but in cyberspace. Pok had found a bank account belonging to one of the leaders of a large pirate organization. He emptied all the money in that account and transferred it into an AJAX secret account.
Then followed the money trail to dozens of other accounts. Which he promptly stole and deposited in AJAXâs coffers. At the rate they were going, they could put a serious dent in the organization.
